In 1983, in response to the emerging AIDS crisis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented a highly discriminatory, lifetime ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men (MSM). Nearly 40 years later, in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and massive blood shortages, the FDA continues these policies for donating.
